What is IV Hydration Therapy?

IV Hydration Therapy is now available here on Maui at RevitalizeMaui Center for Longevity Medicine and Aesthetics, but what is it and how can you benefit from it? IV hydration therapy infuses fluids and nutrients directly into the bloodstream. It is minimally invasive and allows for 100% of the administered dose of nutrients, vitamins, minerals and fluids to be absorbed immediately on a cellular level. This can provide quick relief from a number of different symptoms.

If you need to rehydrate fast, getting an IV is more effective than drinking water. When you drink water you may feel like you are replenished, but this is mainly due to the fact that you are rehydrating the tissues of your tongue and throat. You do not actually absorb the water that you drink until it is in the large intestine, so it can take hours before your body can actually benefit from fluids you just drank.

When you consume a lot of nutrients orally, they can take a toll on your digestive system, causing unpleasant symptoms such as diarrhea, cramps or other problems. IV therapy allows you to increase your levels of essential nutrients without these symptoms. Also, sometimes when we need nutrients most we are nauseous, making it impossible to even drink water without vomiting, let alone take oral supplements.

IV Hydration on Maui

The health benefits associated with IV hydration therapy start as soon as the hydration treatment begins. You will feel the difference as fluid delivers electrolytes, amino acids and essential hydration directly into your bloodstream with 100% absorption.

What is IV Hydration Therapy used for?

Wellness

IV Hydration therapy can include nutrients to help eliminate deficiencies and increase overall wellness. An example of this is a Myer’s cocktail, which is a commonly used combination of nutrients that can benefit people with absorption issues, chronic conditions, autoimmune disorders, or those who just want to supplement their diet in a more efficient way. IV hydration therapy can also be used to administer powerful antioxidants such as vitamin C and glutathione into your system to fight the damage done by free radicals.

Vitamin C – This vitamin is required for making collagen, which is essential for building bone, muscle, cartilage and blood vessels. It helps with your recovery after exercise, as well as reduces your risk for heart disease and certain types of cancer. There is also evidence that vitamin C helps prevent urinary tract infections, anemia, urinary tract infections, Macular degeneration and Alzheimer’s disease.

GlutathioneGlutathione is a natural antioxidant that provides many benefits for anti-aging and disease prevention. It is also a key nutrient for building and repairing tissue, producing proteins and immune system health. It is often used in treatment plans for Osteoarthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome and other age-related illnesses such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Here at our Center on Maui we can customize an IV formula for your specific wellness needs and include other nutrients like B-complex and B12 to give you an energy boost and help your body fight illness, fight fatigue and quickly bounce back from things like travel and jetlag.

Immunity

Vitamin C is an important component in the majority of IV formulas for immunity. Vitamin C is used readily by the immune system, and studies have shown that within 24 hours of getting a cold, vitamin C levels within our immune cells significantly decline. This suggests that there is an increased utilization of vitamin C when you are having an immune response, and also that you should consistently replenish vitamin C when you have an illness. The IV administration of vitamin C also allows you to achieve much higher levels than you would when taking it orally. Studies that compare IV administration to oral vitamin C found that the higher concentrations, only achievable with IV, more effectively and consistently shortened the duration of illness and reduced symptom severity.

Treatments for immunity work best when done at the first signs of having a cold or flu. They should be administered for 2 consecutive days, and possibly a 3rd treatment within the week. You can also get preventative treatments weekly or bi-monthly to help during the time of year when the flu and colds are going around.

Endurance and Recovery

IV Hydration Therapy is becoming more and more popular for athletes and competitive training strategies. This is partially because when you are dehydrated, it cuts your endurance in half. Also, the vitamins and nutrients that can be included in IV hydration treatments give you an extra edge before and after high-intensity exercise.

Dehydration causes:

  • Decreased blood flow to skin
  • Reduced blood volume
  • Reduced ability to sweat
  • Higher core temperatures and poor heat dissipation
  • Increased muscle glycogen use

This combination of factors leads to fatigue and reduced cardiac output, which reduces your endurance and slows you down. One of the most effective ways that you can treat dehydration is with IV hydration therapy. These types of treatments will allow you to boost your performance, as well as increase overall strength, reduce fatigue after competing and reduce recovery times.

Along with needing to be hydrated, our metabolism requires a balance of key minerals and vitamins, but when you are an athlete or doing a lot of physical activity you burn through them quickly. Because of this, effective IV hydration treatments contain essential nutrients, along with the fluid. Some of these nutrients can include:

  • Vitamin B-6
  • Vitamin B-12
  • Vitamin C
  • Calcium

One of the most effective solutions for dehydration is IV hydration therapy. With it, athletes can boost their performance naturally while increasing overall strength. IVs for athletes also reduce the fatigue that comes after a competition, too, providing for shorter recovery times.

There are many different IV hydration treatment options that can be beneficial for highly active people and athletes, but most should include the antioxidant glutathione to help increase stamina. Glutathione works to combat oxidative stress by giving electrons to free radicals while improving blood flow. Many times you can have a customized IV hydration treatment to meet your specific needs, but it is a combination of hydration, vitamins and nutrients that help keep endurance athletes performing at their very best.

Beauty

You may not realize it, but your appearance can be a reflection of your overall health. For example, when you are well-hydrated you should have skin that is soft and supple. When you celebrities on the red carpet and notice that their skin seems to glow, that is a sign of good hydration. On the other hand, being dehydrated leaves your skin looking sallow, dry and brittle. Stress and fatigue can also show up physically in the form of dark circles under the eyes and deeper wrinkles.

Here on Maui, we get exposed to the sun a lot, which can cause sun damage and dark spots. Glutathione and Vitamin C administered in an IV can help to brighten the skin and reduce this damage, and over time with regular treatments even lighten it. Not only will these treatments give you healthy-looking, glowing skin, but they also have a lot of health benefits.

IV hydration therapy can help make you look and feel better by helping with dehydration, as well as infusing nutrients like electrolytes, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It also helps you to better manage stress, feel more energetic and rid your body of toxins. With IV Hydration you will feel better on the inside, as well as see a difference on the outside in things like your skin, hair and nails.

Migraines

IV Hydration therapy provides those who suffer from migraines with treatment options beyond painkillers alone, which can be addictive, not always effective, and actually lead to more headaches. Some of the IV treatments for migraines focus on reducing symptoms like nausea, while others focus on loosening the constriction of the blood vessels in the brain, which is what causes the pain associated with migraines.

Many times migraine attacks are accompanied by nausea, with or without vomiting. An IV containing a combination of medications like Zofran and Toradol can help reduce the pain and nausea from the migraine for fast relief. Magnesium Sulfate can be combined with these to help open the blood vessels to stop the migraine pain at the source. The fluids and nutrients in an IV treatment for migraines also help to replenish your body when you may not be able to eat or drink due to the pain and or nausea from the migraine. This is an effective and quick treatment that you can take advantage of if you experience a migraine while you are on Maui.

Hangovers

Medically speaking, there are many things that happen when you drink alcohol that cause the dreaded hangover the next day. One thing is that drinking causes you to urinate more, which leads to dehydration and waking up with a dry mouth and feeling dizzy. Alcohol is also an irritant that upsets your stomach by triggering the release of stomach acid and slowing down your digestion, which is what causes nausea and vomiting. You may also experience a drop in blood sugar while you are drinking which can cause a sudden onset of fatigue and shaking, even while you are still out enjoying yourself. This can also be part of what leads to your headache the next day, along with the expansion of your blood vessels and, in some cases, a reaction to flavoring in certain darker liquors like brandy or whiskey. Finally, to make matters worse, alcohol can trigger a response from your immune system that makes you have a difficult time focusing and remembering things.

More than likely you have heard of many remedies for a hangover, which can include things like eating a raw egg to standing on your head. In reality, effectively treating the effects of consuming too much alcohol is pretty straightforward. You need to replace the fluid you have lost, as well as nutrients and electrolytes. IV hydration therapy for hangovers can accomplish this, plus medications can be added to relieve nausea, heartburn and control the inflammatory reaction to alcohol.

IV hydration therapy is the best way to cure all that ails you when you are experiencing a hangover. While we do not advocate overindulging with alcohol, especially on a regular basis, we know that it is common for people to drink more on vacation or special occasions and that you do not want a hangover to ruin any of your time on Maui. Getting IV Hydration Therapy is a great way to get on with your day after a night of celebrating. You can also have your treatment customized because no two patients or hangovers are exactly the same.

What to expect from IV Hydration Treatment at RevitalizeMaui

Whether you live on Maui or are just visiting, you can benefit from IV Hydration Therapy. Our center is located conveniently in North Kihei, and we have an IV lounge where you can receive your treatment in a comfortable, relaxing environment.

Most of our IV drips take anywhere between 30-90 minutes during which you can sleep, read, listen to music, or just relax. Some high-dose treatments, such as high-dose vitamin C (Meyers Cocktail), can take 2-3 hours but we will let you know ahead of time if that is the case.

During your treatment, the fluid may feel cold going in at first, and then you might experience a warm sensation in your chest or abdomen. Many people also feel as though they are able to “taste” the vitamins during the treatment.

How does IV hydration therapy work?

IV hydration therapy delivers fluids and nutrients directly into the bloodstream, allowing for higher levels of nutrients to be introduced with 100% absorption, unlike with oral supplements or vitamins.

Is IV hydration therapy safe?

IV Therapy is safe under the supervision of a physician. Our staff will always work with you to determine a safe and appropriate treatment, which can include having lab work completed if needed.

Is IV hydration therapy just a “trend”?

Lately, with celebrities utilizing IV hydration therapy, and Hangover IV options becoming more common in places like Las Vegas and other major cities, it can certainly seem like it is a trend. However, doctors have been using these types of treatments for many years to safely and effectively treat and manage a wide range of health conditions and provide their patients with greater levels of health and wellness.

IV nutrition and hydration therapy has been used since the 1930’s and 40’s and began to gain more traction in the 1908’s with the work of Dr. Myers who developed the Myers’ Cocktail IV to treat a number of different symptoms and disorders.

What are the different types of IV therapy?

Here at our center on Maui, we offer many different types of IV treatments. We have options to help boost immune support, treat low iron, improve memory function, boost energy and improve athletic function and recovery. We also have treatments with Glutathione to improve your complexion, as well as high C treatments.

We also offer custom treatments based on your specific health needs, as well as the option for nutritional testing to identify which nutrients you may be deficient in.

Am I eligible for IV hydration therapy?

IV therapy is useful for a wide range of people and conditions. To find out more about whether or not IV hydration therapy could be beneficial for you, please feel free to contact us at RevitalizeMaui at 808-419-7445.

How much does it cost?

You do not have to pay for an office visit when you come into our Center on Maui for an IV treatment, only the cost of the treatment itself. Our IV treatments typically range from $179 to $249. Custom IVs that utilize higher doses of nutrients are available at additional cost.

I’m afraid of needles… Does it HURT?

Most people barely feel the IV placement, and many don’t feel it at all. A small 22 gauge IV catheter is used, and we can provide topical anesthetic upon request.

How often will I have to have the treatment?

It depends on what you are getting treatments for. Some people get monthly IVs to help their immune system, while others get treatments only when they feel depleted, sick or hungover. Many chronic conditions require an intense period of treatment for the first 1-2 months, during which you may need several treatments per week to start, and then they become more spaced out and then followed by maintenance therapy 1-4 times/month.
